2008 Water Workshop : WATER ECOSYSTEM ASSESSMENT

INTODUCTION
The May 2008 PERF workshop was hosted by Total at The Palais Beaumont of Pau, France.
About 30 people attended the meeting. Most of them were representatives from the oil industry, but also some consulting firm and laboratories. They all shared technical perspectives and experience for methodology in risk and impact assessment of petroleum pollution in water ecosystem. The organisation team of the workshop want to focus on:
- New regulations that required ecosystem assessment
- Facilitating worlwide experience feedback to meet these challenges
- Enforcing present methodology and developing new one to perform more and more accurate assessment.
The first day started by presentations of the European regulations REACH, Water Framework Directive and the OSPAR convention, considered as the starting points of stricter ecosystem assessment request. The end of Day 1 was dedicated to the visit of the Artificial Stream leaded Anne Basseres from Total and her team. Day 2 included four next session, presenting different methods of risk and impact assessment: the hydrocarbon Block Approach, the Whole effluent assessment, data validation through mesocosm experiment and in situ impact assessment in receiving water. This workshop finished by a discussion and a drafting of a conclusion gathering all the main information expressed and justified during these two days .
