63rd PERF Meeting : DEEP WATER and IMPACTS of TREATING CHEMICALS
November 3-4 2003


Location

Houston, TX


The Fall Meeting took place on November 4 to 6, at the Crowne Hotel Plaza, in Houston. The PERF Board of Directors Meeting was held on Tuesday 4th. The general meeting started on Wednesday, November 5th ; about 60 people attended it.


A first session was dedicated to Deepwater.
Another one was dedicated to the treating chemicals used in production that can impact oil and gas industries's activities. For the first time, chemical companies were invited to present their work to the PERF attendees.

After Sara McMillen, from ChevronTexaco, spoke about Safety , George Paczkowski, ConocoPhillips Downstream Technology Vice President, gave the opening remarks.

 

DEEPWATER SESSION


General session

MMS Deepwater Seabed Survey ---- Mary Boatman, MMS.

Environmental Risk of Deep-Sea E&P activities ---- Steinar Sanni, Akvamiljo

Synthetic Drilling Muds Seabed Survey ---- Jim Ray, Shell.

Deepwater Biodiversity ---- Roy Kropp, Battelle Pacific NW National Lab.

ROV Technology for Deepwater Blowout Intervention ---- Dick Raines, Exxonmobil.

Marine Mammals and Noise ---- Rodger Melton, Exxonmobil. 

 

Upstream Discussion Group

Nancy Comstock, from the Department of Energy (DOE) spoke about the topics that could lead to funding for research projects or workshops. She also asked PERF members for inputs on produced water. A "brainstorming" session to think about emerging issues followed.

Sediment Trap Study and Field Validation of OOC Model---- Tim Nedwed, Exxonmobil.

 

CHEMICAL SESSION


During the general session and the downstream discussion group, the chemical vendors spoke about:

Deepwater chemical treatment programs
Chemicals applied to upstream which may be transported in crude to refining
Potential impact of chemicals in refining
Screen new chemicals for life cycle impact
Emphasis on ultimate disposition, especially impacts on environmental systems (Discussion Group)
Procedures for screening for potential ultimate impacts
