64th PERF Meeting : HEAVY OIL
April 1-2, 2004
Location
Calgary, Canada
PETROCANADA hosted this 64th PERF Meeting at the PETROCANADA Center in Calgary, Canada. About 30 people attended it, mostly representatives from the oil industry.
The board meeting was held on March 31st. The main session, on April 1, was dedicated to the topic "Heavy Oil" with some very interesting presentations. On the second day, the upstream and downstream discussion-groups took place. ChevronTexaco presented two new proposals.
You will find below an overview of the presentations, the discussion groups minutes as well as a description of the two new proposals
You can dowload the agenda of the meeting here.
UPSTREAM DISCUSSION GROUP
The discussion group was led by Jerry Neff from Battelle Memorial Institute. There are many environmental issues related to heavy oil production, upgrading process and transport: waste and byproducts, GHG, surface reclamation, disposal, fugitive emissions, coke and sulphur.. Besides, there is a need to develop better chemical dispersants, beach cleaning agents, skimmers and booms, mechanical shores...
DOWNSTREAM DISCUSSION GROUP
The downstream discussion group was led by Tim Blackmore from Omnicon Consultants.
The Canadian Crude Quality Technical Association is conducting several projects related to Heavy Oil. In order to initiate the discussion, Tim Blackmore gave an overview of the Heavy Oil BS&W project. Heavy Oil processing is facing increasing difficulties. This project aimed at isolating the causes of desalting and quantifying the impact of individual solids and water components of BS&W on various sectors.
The PERF members think that a project about desalters would be of high interest. Bruce Kennedy, PETROCANADA, is to write a proposal aiming at understanding some fundamental mechanisms and applications of the process.
Two other CCQTA projects were also presented: The TAN project, that aims at reviewing the existing test methods and the Crude Tank Cleaning Project
You can find more information about these projects on the CCQTA website : http://www.ccqta.com/projects.asp
PROJECT PROPOSALS
Proposal 2004-01: SRU TAIL GAS AND TGTU EMISSIONS by ChevronTexaco
Problem: There is a lack of a predictive tool to estimate H2S, NH3, COS, CS2 that remain after incineration of SRU or TGTU tail gas.
The proposal aims at building a meta-analysis of existing data.

Proposal 2004-02:Life Cycle Analysis for environmental decision-making by ChevronTexaco
Problem: A LCA identifies, evaluates and helps minimize the environmental impacts of a process. For several years, many LCA methodologies have been developed by several organizations (Setac, NWRI, LLNL, etc..), several LCA have been conducted. There is a need to compile data and case studies to clarify the potential use of LCA in the petroleum industry.
Presentation: You will soon be able to download a presentation.
