65th PERF Meeting: GREENHOUSE GASES
Juy 20-21, 2004

Location

Grand Forks, North Dakota

This 65th PERF Meeting was hosted by the Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) at their facilities (University of North Dakota) in Grand Forks.
The meeting was a success. About 70 people attended it. Half of them were representatives from the oil industry. Most of the other attendees were researchers from the EERC.

The board meeting was held on Tuesday July 20th. After a brief introduction by Gerald Groenewold, Director of the EERC, Jill Kerr and John Wilkinson (Exxonmobil, Chair of PERF and Member of the Board of directors respectively) gave an overview of PERF. After that, the main session was dedicated to Greenhouse Gases. Attendees were given excellent presentations by speakers from API, Oil Companies and Research centers. Normal PERF business items(new proposals, status reports and discussions)took place on the second day, right after the upstream and downstream discussion groups. Four new proposals have been presented. A visit of the EERC facilities was also conducted.

The information below provides an overview of the presentations, minutes from the Discussion Group meetings, the status report of two projects and descriptions of the four new proposals

UPSTREAM DISCUSSION GROUP

The discussion group was led by Sung-I Johnson, ConocoPhillips. The meeting was primarily a brainstorming session among the attendees about the research topics or points of interest or concern (related to GHG). Primary issues identified included:

Standard methods for emission control
Easy emissions reporting
Nomegraph on acid gas treatment chemicals
GHG reduction on flare gas and cogen opportunities
Development of more solid N2O emission factors (lbs/BTU)
Energy conservation efficiency performance studies
Cover all GHG (i.e. water vapors)
Regulatory issues/ CO2 injection
Leakage of CO2 and CH4 from reservoirs
Effects of CO2 injection on groundwater or soil
Risk of catastrophic release of CO2.
Innovative measurements of traditional practices
During a conference call, Sara McMillen, ChevronTexaco, former chair of PERF, presented a subject of particular interest for the petroleum industry: internal success references, whether they are called Best Practices, or ChevronTexaco standards .

DOWNSTREAM DISCUSSION GROUP

The Downstream discussion group was led by Dave Fashimpaur (BP), Bruce Kennedy (Petro-Canada) and John Wilkinson (ExxonMobil)

The Downstream DG focused on four main discussion areas relevant to GHG.
The four areas are:

Flaring and venting
Energy efficiency
Capture/clean-up/conversion/avoidance
Accounting (Wells-to-wheels accounting)
A current PERF project is already addressing flaring issues and should address minimizing emissions from flaring and venting.

For energy efficiency, discussion revolved around hydrogen plant, low energy separation, and using low grade heat for greenhouses or other industries.

For capture, a CO2 capture technology project was proposed to evaluate particular capture technologies for specific petrochemical processes. Dave Fashimpaur (BP) and Joe Cross (ConocoPhillips) will lead this proposal (cf. below).

The API Compendium was discussed for the accounting bullet. A joint upstream/downstream project was proposed to look at what emission factors, measurement, and monitoring methods may need to be revised in the next edition. Theresa Takacs (ExxonMobil) and Karin Ritter (API) will lead this proposal (cf. below).

STATUS REPORT:

Mercury cooperative project
The project aims at sharing information related to the management of mercury contained in crude oils and condensates

Water Management Cooperative project
The project aims at exchanging research, technology, and experience in the area of water usage minimization, optimization, and reuse at operating facilities and in exploration and production.

NEW PROPOSALS:

Proposal 2004-03: CO2 Capture Technology Review by BP/ ConocoPhillips
Contact Dave Fashimpaur, BP, FashimDN@bp.com or Joe Cross, ConocoPhillips, Joe.B.Cross@conocophillips.com to have more information about the proposal or look at proposal 2004-03 on the website.

Proposal 2004-04:Identification of opportunities to improve/update GHG estimation methods by ExxonMobil
Contact Theresa Takacs to have more information about the proposal theresa.j.takacs@exxonmobil.com or look at proposal 2004-05 on the website.

Proposal 2004-05: Understanding the Effects of time and energy on the effectiveness of dispersants by ExxonMobil
The goals of the project are:

to determine whether dispersants will remain with treated oil slicks over time.
determine whether oil can be gradually dispersed into the water column in very low energy environments.
determine the ambient energy (turbulence) necessary to keep dispersed oil droplets suspended in the water column (without re-surfacing).

Contact Charlene Owens to have more information about the proposal charlene.k.owens@exxonmobil.com or look at proposal 2004-05 on the website.

Proposal 2004-06: Reducing Desalter Environmental Impacts by PETROCANADA
This project aims at reviewing and updating desalter technology in the current operating environment. Launch a presentation by clicking Contact Bruce Kennedy to have more information about the proposal KENNEDY@petro-canada.ca or look at proposal 2004-06 on the website.
