70th PERF meeting: ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGIES
March 22-23, 2006

Location

Paris La Defense, Paris

INTRODUCTION

The Spring 2006 PERF Meeting was hosted by TOTAL in Paris La Défense, France. About 60 people attended the meeting. Most of them were representatives from the oil industry, CONCAWE, NICOLE, research institutes or laboratories.
The meeting focused on "Environmental risk assessment methodologies: Biological and analytical aspects". Analytical and biological approaches are complementary to describe alterations of the ecosystem: the analytical approach is necessary to characterize the nature of pollution and the biological approach is necessary to evaluate the bioavailability and the real effects on alive organisms. Data generated have to be used for relevant risk assessment studies.
Topics such as environmental management of emissions, the Whole Effluent Assessment and the control of risk from produced water discharge were presented. The optical technologies for air monitoring and the health effects of soil after treatment was explained. The Network for Contaminated Land in Europe (NICOLE) and the Oil companies' European Association for Environment, health and safety in refining distribution (CONCAWE) gave some presentations on ecological assessment and environmental risk assessment related to petroleum products and groundwater.
Prior to the technical meeting, the PERF Board met on March 20th. The technical meeting included one day of presentations on general, Air and Water Session (March 21). The second day of presentations described key environmental issues on Soil, Groundwater and Petroleum Products (March 22). Upstream and Downstream Discussions and PERF business items (status report and project proposals) took place the same day in the afternoon.

The information below provides an overview of the presentations and minutes from the Discussion Group meetings

Before the Upstream and Downstream discussion group J. K. Wittle, Electro-Petroleum, Inc gave a presentation of the ElectroChemical GeoOxidation for Remediation of Contaminated Soil. Click and open J.K. Wittle presentation.

UPSTREAM DISCUSSION GROUP

The discussion group was led by Jill Kerr, Exxonmobil. The meeting was primarily a brainstorming session among the attendees about the research topics or points of interest or concern:

  • LNG environmental problem
  • heavy oil environmental risk assessment
  • drilling mud: state of the art

DOWNSTEAM DISCUSSION GROUP

The discussion group was led by Dave Fashimpaur, BP. The meeting was primarily a brainstorming session among the attendees about the research topics or points of interest or concern.

The downstream discussion group reviewed a project proposal “Whole Effluent Validation Study” that was presented by Anne Basseres of Total. Click and open Anne Basseres' presentation. The project would study the effects of whole effluent on daphnia and other invertebrates using the CONCAWE triad approach (biological, lab, field studies).

NEW PROPOSALS:

Downstream proposals: The following topics were identified as potential PERF projects, with persons responsible for developing pre-proposal:

  • “Whole Effluent Validation Study”. The project would study the effects of whole effluent on daphnia and other invertebrates using the CONCAWE triad approach (biological, lab, field studies). Click and open Anne Basseres' presentation.
  • TPH 2D GC methodology/predicting environmental effects – Mike Comber, ExxonMobil
  • WWTP Modeling Fate and Effects of Pollutants – Ludo Diels, VITO
  • VOC IR Cameras/sharing cooperative/quantification/speciation – Dave Fashimpaur, BP and Marie-France Benassy, Total
