74th PERF meeting : ADVANCED BIOTECHNOLOGY
June 12-13, 2007
Location
Belfast, North Ireland, UK
Introduction
The Summer 2007 PERF Meeting was hosted by Questor and held at Queen's University Belfast(QUB) in Belfast, North Ireland, UK. About 40 people attended the meeting. Most of them were representatives from the oil industry, from consulting firms, and researchers from Questor's member universities.
The meeting focused on 'Advanced Biotechnology'. Topics such as microbiological technologies, microsensors for a better characterisationt of the petroleum products, bioremediation technologies were exposed. The Oil companies and Questor researchers both really appreciated to communicate with each other.
Prior to the technical meeting, the PERF Board met on June 11th. The technical meeting included one day and a half of presentations from Questor research representatives describing their project and from the industrials or consultants who exposed some of their application of biotechnologies. Upstream and Downstream Discussions and PERF business items (status report and project proposals) took place the last day in the morning.
You can find the Agenda of the meeting here
The information below provides an overview of the presentations and minutes from the Discussion Group meetings.
Upstream Discussion Group
The discussion group was led by Todd Ririe, BP. The meeting was primarily a brainstorming session among the attendees about the research topics or points of interest or concern concerning biotechnologies.
- GMO microbes cleaning contamination
- genetically modified molecules that can detect specific contaminants in water
- microbes for remediation (how to follow avancement of remediation, how to accelerate remediation performance?)
Todd presented on behalf of James Robinson (BP) a pre-proposal for “Evaluation and comparison of media filtration produced water treatment technologies” including the following types of media ( activated carbon - organo-clay - walnut shell - combined resin, polymer and clay product (canisters) - granulated starch coated in surfactant (pellets))
Evaluation to include:
- Dispersed hydrocarbon removal efficiency
- Environmental Impact Factor (EIF) reduction - evaluation of performance with specific constituents that most significantly contribute to EIF
- Susceptability to physical fouling by solids (sand, scale, etc.)
- Regeneration / Reuse Potential
- Operability (life of media between change-out and/or regeneration)
- Cost (including waste management),
As there seemed to be several people interested in this project, James Robinson will prepare a formal proposal to present it at the next meeting.
Downstream Discussion Group
Discussed the existing project proposals listed on the PERF website. Determined that all of the proposed projects should be withdrawn, merged with other active projects, or re-proposed if a need and project mentor still exists.
Project Proposals:
John Wilkinson (ExxonMobil) presented a proposal for a funded project for “ Membrane Bioreactor Demonstration”. Project would Evaluate membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology as a competitive alternate to conventional activated sludge system (aeration basin and clarifier). Determine if this wastewater treatment technology is comparable or superior in operability and effluent quality.
James M. Phelan (ExxonMobil) was nominated as project coordinator.
John Wilkinson (Exonmobil) presented another project proposal for “EU Refinery Effluent Assessment”. The project would be to create a comprehensive database of PRTR substances and comparable (size, type, treatment, etc.) refinery effluent data (based on results of Phase 1 CONCAWE effort), to provide SPME results on effluent data testing. They would like to publish a report for advocacy within refining industry and organizations with practical generic guidance for refineries.
Frank .J. Kerze (Exxonmobil) is the project coordinator. Click here to open the presentation of this project proposal.
