2009 Remediation Workshop
September 9 - 10, 2009

Location

Houston, Texas

The September 2009 PERF workshop was held by BP and Chevron in Houston, Texas at the Chevron Briarpark Facility (3901 Briarpark, Houston, TX).

This event was follow up of the last year workshop on remediation and the occasion to exchange new technologies, researches and issues on soil remediation.

Summary of the meeting:

At a meeting of the PERF management discussion group several years ago a proposal was made by Chevron that a focused workshop on remediation would be a good direction for PERF to consider. In further support of this initiative, CVX agreed to host the first workshop last year in Berkley, California. Attendance was very good (approximately 45), and it was determined that this was indeed a viable activity for PERF to support on an annual basis.

The agenda focused on three topics: phytoremediation/constructed wetlands, contaminated sediments, and vapor intrusion.

The purpose of the meeting was to encourage networking amongst the member companies on issues of interest to the remediation PMs and their technical in-house staff particularly focused on the three topical areas presented. Speakers included academia (Clemson on constructed wetlands and University of Texas on contaminated sediments) as well as industry speakers on each of the three topics. Consultants were brought in for the contaminated sediments discussion as much of the expertise resides within that community.

Will Gala (CVX) discussed the oil company perspective on sediments and concluded that while the oil companies are not part of the big expensive sediments sites, we all have in our portfolio sites that do require our attention. A lively discussion ensued as to what role PERF might play in this subject as there appears to be a number of active groups that are currently working this topic. It was determined that sheens were something of interest to the companies that was related to contaminated sediments where there has not been a great deal of research activity. NAPL releases in near shore environments commonly result in sheening which sometimes leads to assessment of contaminated sediments.

The constructed wetlands and phytoremediation presentations included no consultants, one from academia, and two technical presenters from CVX, and one from BP. It is clear that CVX has developed an innovative approach to wetland reconstruction in the Gulf Coast and they are hopeful others will take advantage of their lessons learned in building wetlands in this environment. The BP presentation highlighted the wide range of phyto applications within BP and it was determined that no other companies were using phyto as much as BP which was also a topic of discussion. Because there are a number of best practices available (e.g., the ITRC guidance), it was decided that it might be advisable to compile the best practices for wetland reconstruction and phyto into a "white paper" that would be easy to use by PMs.

On Day Two, the topic was soil gas sampling and vapor intrusion. Each company presented their approach to soil gas sampling and analysis. The BP approach was presented including the recently implemented review of soil gas sampling work plans and work products and the items within the BP standard operating procedures for soil gas sampling and analysis. A list of common issues (errors) from the regulatory and consulting sides of the business were presented and discussed. In subsequent presentations other companies agreed that there are a number of common mistakes still being made by our consultants such as not paying enough attention to use of consistent units (e.g., ppmv is not equivalent to ug/m3).

A sign up sheet was passed around in order to compile a list of interested to parties to further discuss the possible need for a PERF workgroup on either constructed wetlands/phyto or contaminated sediments. CVX agreed to organize the first conference call on the contaminated sediments issue and a lead person is currently being solicited to organize a call on the wetlands/phyto topic. The PERF board of directors will determine if this workshop event will occur next year, and if so, who will host.
