project 2009-02 : PM Methods Sharing Cooperative

Location

PM Methods Sharing Cooperative

SPONSOR:                                BP, ExxonMobil, or Shell
OBJECTIVE:                             Share data and knowledge regarding new and improved particulate matter (PM) test methods.
ESTIMATED COST:                     $250K
CONTRACTOR(S):                      Air Control Techniques, P.C.
PARTICIPATING COMPANIES:      BP, ExxonMobil, Shell, ...
PROJECT TYPE:                       Funded / Sharing

SCOPE:
Air Control Techniques, P.C. will conduct a set of API wet stack filterable and condensable PM2.5 tests. The results of the filterable PM2.5 tests will be compared with results from Method 5B tests conducted simultaneously. The partitioning of solids captured in the nozzle, probe, cyclone, and filter of the API system will also be compared with the partitioning of solids in the Method 5B sampling train to obtain more information concerning the performance characteristics of the API wet stack sampling system.
Scanning electron microscopy analyses of the API and Method 5B filters will provide information concerning the capture efficiency of dry PM2.5 particles into probe water droplets. This possible issue could not be adequately evaluated in this laboratory evaluation.
The catalytic cracker test program will also include an evaluation of the extent of PM2.5 particle release from droplets captured in the API sampling system. The results of this evaluation will help determine if the nozzle droplet cut size is an important design parameter in the API wet stack PM2.5 sampling system.   Project members would be encouraged to volunteer field test sites by source type, source testing/data collection: $30K/test. $45K for multiple methods (5B 202, etc.),
